RED STARTS FAST, HOLDS OFF SWEDEN IN U22 OPENER CALGARY, Alta. – It may have been a little tougher than it expected at the end, but Team Red has the first win of the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp. Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Man.) and Stephanie Ramsay (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) scored 64 seconds apart late in the third period as Red held off a furious rally by Sweden to post a 6-4 win on Sunday night. The Swedes scored twice in the early minutes of the third period to cut a three-goal deficit to one before Frykas finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play from Jessica Wong (Baddeck, N.S.) and Ann-Sophie Bettez (Sept-Îles, Que.) to push the lead back to two. Ramsay restored the three-goal lead just over a minute later, rushing into the offensive zone, sweeping around the net and tucking a backhand past Swedish goaltender Sara Grahn to fully push the momentum back in the favour of the Canadian side. Frykas finished with a pair of goals, while Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont.), Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) and Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, Ont.) also put their names on the scoresheet. Bettez had a pair of assists in the win. Red jumped out to a very early lead, going up 2-0 just over six minutes in, and taking a 3-0 lead to the first intermission on goals from Frykas, Bendus and Phillips. Prevost and Jenni Asserholt traded goals in the second period, and Klara Myrén and Maria Rooth counted goals for Sweden early in the third to make a game of it before Frykas and Ramsay gave Red a little breathing room late. Pernilla Winberg rounded out the scoring for the Swedes in the game’s final minute. Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) went the distance in the Canadian goal, making 18 saves. Red enjoys a night off on Monday, while the Swedes will return to the ice at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena to face the other Canadian entry, Team White (7 p.m. MT).
