CANADA RED OPENS U22 CAMP WITH WIN OVER CIS ALL-STARS

With two goals in 27 seconds in the second period, Team Canada Red took control of the first game of the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp and went on to beat the CIS All-Stars 4-2 on Monday night at York University in Toronto.

With the game tied at 2-2, Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, QC/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) converted a great pass from Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) on the power play to give Canada Red the lead 14 minutes into the second. Less than 30 seconds later, Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, ON/Durham Lightning, PWHL) beat two CIS defencemen in a race for the puck and beat goaltender Charline Labonté on the breakaway to give Red a 4-2 edge.

Canada Red fought back from an early 1-0 deficit after the CIS’ Alyssa Cecere beat netminder Kayley Herman (Weyburn, SK/University of New Hampshire, HE) just 1:28 into the first.

Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst, CHA), a member of Canada’s gold medal-winning Olympic team in 2006, knotted it at 1-1 when she deflected a Blais shot past Labonté, her teammate on Canada’s National Women’s Team.

Late in the first, Ann-Sophie Bettez (Sept-Îles, QC/McGill University, CIS) scored a highlight-reel goal when she put a backhand pass from Andrea Boras (Calgary, AB/University of Alberta, CIS) past Labonté.

Blais and Samantha Hunt (Calgary, AB/Colgate University, ECAC), two of the 15 players at camp who were members of Canada’s undefeated National Women’s Under-22 Team last season, stood out in the camp opener, creating numerous chances for Canada Red in the win.

The selection camp continues on Tuesday when Canada White squares off with the CIS All-Stars at 8 p.m. EDT.
