FINLAND WINS LAST GAME OF TOURNAMENT 5-2 OVER TEAM RED

OTTAWA – In a penalty filled affair, Team Finland secured their first victory of the tournament with a 5-2 win over Team Red.

Canada opened up the scoring in the first period on a goal by Hayley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON) at 2:31.

Finland responded by adding two powerplay goals in the first, both while on a five-on-three advantage. Mari Pehkonen and Michelle Karvinen scored five minutes apart to give Finland a 2-1 lead.

Nora Tallus put Finland up 3-1 in the second period before Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne, MB) chipped one in to bring Team Red back to within one.

Michelle Karvinen added her second of the game and Finland was ahead 4-2 going in to the final period.

Karoliina Rantamaki added Finland’s fifth and final goal in what turned out to be a 5-2 win, Finland’s only victory of the tournament.

Each team had an astounding 21 powerplays, as there were 42 minor penalties called.

Team White finished in first with a 3-1 tournament record, Team Red finished second at 2-2, and Finland was third at 1-3.

The Team Canada Under-22 coaching staff, led by Head Coach Peter Smith, will now trim the roster down to 22 players and will regroup before hosting the USA Under-22 Women’s team in a three game series starting next week at the University of Ottawa.
