NEWELL MAKES 33 SAVES FOR SHUTOUT, RED BLANKS WHITE IN U18 CAMP FINALE

CALGARY, Alta. – Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, B.C./Kootenay, BCMML) stopped all 33 shots she faced for the shutout as Red wrapped up Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp by blanking White 2-0 on Saturday night.

The loss was the first of the camp for White, and gave Red a split of the two all-Canadian intrasquad games – White earned a 3-1 victory over Red on Tuesday night.

Geneviève Bannon (Candiac, Que./Ontario Hockey Academy, Midget AA) and Samantha Sutherland (Cochrane, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) scored second-period goals for Red, which earned the win despite being outshot 33-19.

After a scoreless opening period, Bannon gave Red the lead for good just 67 seconds into the second, stepping into the slot and snapping a shot that snuck past White netminder Michaela Logan (North Vancouver, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL).

Sutherland doubled the lead late in the frame, just seconds after stepping out of the penalty box, finishing off a feed from Sydney McKibbon (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) for a 2-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

Newell was at her busiest in the third period, particularly in the dying minutes when White enjoyed a two-minute six-on-four advantage, but could not manage a goal thanks to a Newell’s standout goaltending and a Red defence that didn’t let many shots through on the penalty kill.

The 40 players at camp will find out Sunday morning if they’ve earned one of 20 spots on Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team for a three-game series against the United States in Blaine, Minn., beginning Aug. 16.
