BLUE SPREADS AROUND SCORING IN SECOND CAMP WIN

TORONTO, Ont. – Five goals, five different goal scorers and two wins for Blue at the National Women’s Under-22 Team selection camp.

Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) and Chelsea Karpenko (Winnipeg, Man.) scored goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and Vanessa Emond (Lévis, Que.), Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) and Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, Man.) added insurance markers in the third as Blue posted its second win in as many nights with a 5-1 victory over White on Monday night.

The game was the first of two that Blue – an under-22 team – will play against under-18 competition. It opened with a 4-2 win over Yellow, its U22 rivals, on Sunday, and will take on Red, the other U18 entry, on Tuesday. Blue and Yellow will meet again in an all-U22 game to close the camp on Saturday.

It was White that gained the upper hand in the early going, as Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ont.) converted shorthanded just past the midway point of the first period for a 1-0 White advantage, moments after White netminder Amanda Makela (Thunder Bay, Ont.) had turned away a Blue’s first big scoring chance.

But Wakefield would beat Makela early in the second period and Karpenko took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to give Blue its first lead late in the frame before three goals in eight minutes in the third period put the game away.

Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) added two assists in the victory, while Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, Que.) got the win between the pipes for Blue, making 16 saves.
