U22 TEAM WRAPS UP COMPETITION WITH WIN OVER U18S

CALGARY, Alta. – Finally, a goal at five-on-five.

After going scoreless at even strength in their three losses to the National Women’s Team, Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team converted three times at five-on-five in the first period on its way to a 4-2 win over the National Women’s Under-18 Team on Friday.
The game marked the first meeting ever between the two national women’s teams.
Despite having just 14 hours between the end of their 10-0 loss to the national team on Thursday night and the opening face-off on Friday, the U22s hit the board early when Karell Emard (Richelieu, Que.) and Catherine White (Brampton, Ont.) notched goals in the first 8:28 of the first period.\

Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S.) cut the lead in half for the U18 side with a power play marker just past the 12-minute mark, but Stefanie McKeough (Carlsbad Springs, Ont.) poked a rebound past U18 goaltender Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, N.S.) to restore the two-goal lead heading to the dressing room.

The U22s continued to storm the under-18 goal in the second period, outshooting the U18s 12-2 in the frame, but the goaltending duo of MacDonald and Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont.) kept it a 3-1 game entering the final 20 minutes.
The lead became three very early in the final frame, as a shot from Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, Que.) hit a skate and ricocheted past Howe for a 4-1 lead.

Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.), the youngest player on the ice at just 15, scored a power play six minutes later for the under-18 team to whittle the lead back down to two, but that would be as close as the U18s would get, as late penalty trouble squashed any chance of a comeback.
The U22s finished with a 39-13 advantage in shots on goal, including 28-6 over the final 40 minutes.

Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont.) and Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont.) split the goaltending duties for the under-22 side; each allowed one goal in their 30 minutes of work.

The game wrapped up the U22 schedule, while the under-18 team will prep for the first of three games against the United States on Monday night (7 p.m. MT) at Father David Bayer Olympic Arena.
