2002 Olympic Winter Games (Women)

After opening the 2002 Winter Olympic Games with a 7-0 victory over Kazakhstan on Monday, Canada’s Women’s Olympic hockey team will face Russia, today at the E Center in Salt Lake City.

Hayley Wickenheiser and Vicky Sunohara lead the way for Canada against Kazakhstan, scoring two goals each. Cherie Piper, Tammy-Lee Shewchuk and Danielle Goyette also scored for Canada.

Winnipeg native Sami Jo Small will get the start in goal today. Small has a 6-3 win-loss record in 2001-2002 with a 2.15 goals against average. She will be looking for her 26th career win with Canada’s National Women’s Team.

With a win against Russia today, Canada will qualify for the semi-finals on Tuesday, February 19.

After today’s game, Canada will have two days to practice before returning to the ice to face Sweden on Saturday at the Peaks Ice Arena in Provo, Utah. Canada is 27-0-1 all-time vs. Sweden.
