2009-10 National Women's Team

Canada 2 - Sherwood Park 5

KINGS GET THREE IN THIRD FOR WIN OVER NWT

SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. – Shane Maloney scored the eventual game-winning goal and Michael Samoil and Mathew Ketsa added insurance markers, all in the third period, as the Sherwood Park Kings defeated Canada’s National Women’s Team 5-2 on Tuesday night.

It was just the seventh loss in 20 NWT Midget Series games for Canada.

The teams went into the third period tied 2-2, after a back-and-forth 40 minutes that entertained the sold-out crowd at Sherwood Park Arena. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house and fans stood in both ends of the rink.

The Kings took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Brayden Stauch and Sammy Spurrell, but Canada roared back in the second period.

First, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) scored on a power play, when she grabbed a loose puck in close on the Sherwood Park net and fired it past Adam Clark. Less than three minutes later, Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) tied the game at 2-2 when she scored on a goal-mouth scramble.

Canada’s goaltender, Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, Que.), made a sparkling split save late in the second to keep the game tied. Nolan Yaremchuk of the Kings grabbed a rebound and quickly fired the puck, which seemed headed for the corner. St-Pierre, though, went left to right to deny the scoring opportunity.

The National Women’s Team wraps up its northern Alberta three-game road trip on Wednesday in the provincial capital when it visits Clareview Arena to face Edmonton CAC.
