CANADA BLANKS FINLAND AT 4 NATIONS

Lake Placid, NY – Jayna Hefford paced Canada with two goals, while Hayley Wickenheiser and Caroline Ouellette contributed two points apiece as Canada blanked Finland 6-0 in the opening game at the 2008 4 Nations Cup in Lake Placid, NY.

Canada carried the play early on, but Finnish netminder Noora Raty seemed up to the task, making point blank saves on Jennifer Wakefield, Gillian Apps and Gina Kingsbury in the opening eight minutes of play. Canada finally opened the scoring at 8:09, as Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/ Ekilstuna, SWE) beat Raty with a hard wrist shot.

On the tail end of a power play, Canada made it 2-0. Wickenheiser’s centering pass deflected off Gillian Apps to Jayna Hefford, who made it count. Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC/ Harvard, ECAC) added a third Canadian goal late in the frame, as Canada outshot Finland 15-5 in the opening period.

Canada continued to give Raty a busy afternoon in the middle frame, firing 20 more shots in her direction. But only one got past her, as Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/ New Hampshire, EAST) scored to stake Canada to a 4-0 lead through two periods of play.

Canada added two more in the third period to make the final 6-0. Hefford, with her second, and Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne, MB/ Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA), with her first international goal in her first international game, closed out the scoring. Charline Labonté made 12 saves for her 11th career shutout.

Canada’s National Women’s Team now gets a day off before facing USA on Thursday evening, at 7pm (EST). It will mark the first Canada-USA game since the U.S. won the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship by defeating Canada in the gold medal game in April 2008 in Harbin, China.
