POULIN’S TWO GOALS PACE RED TO WIN OVER SWEDEN

Prince George, BC – Team Canada Red concluded the preliminary round of the National Women’s Team Fall Festival with a 5-1 victory over Team Sweden on Friday night at the Prince George Coliseum.

Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Beauce-Amiante, midget) scored two goals for Team Red, giving her seven goals in five games.

Stephanie Jones (Grande Prairie, AB/Mercyhurst College, CHA) opened the scoring with her first goal in international play with the National Women’s Team program. Jones’ goal was scored off a goal-mouth scramble at 11:54.

Less than two minutes later, Poulin scored her first of the game, finishing off a pretty passing play from Chelsea Grills (Stittsville, ON/St. Lawrence University, ECAC) and Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Minnesota, WWHL).

Sweden cut into Canada’s lead at 16:28, when Maria Rooth made a nice move to her backhand and put a shot over the shoulder of Red’s Sami Jo Small (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, NWHL).

There was no scoring in the second. But Poulin brought the crowd to its feet early in the third with the goal of the night. She streaked in alone on Sweden’s Kim Martin, went from her forehand to backhand and roofed a shot just under the crossbar.

Team Red added two goals later in the period by Ashley Riggs (Pickering, ON/Telus Lightning, NWHL) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Dartmouth College, ECAC). Riggs also had an assist for a two-point night.

Team Red outshout Sweden 48-28.

Team Red and Team White will meet in Saturday night’s gold medal game, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the Coliseum. The teams split their first two matchups at this event.

Sweden will play Prince George’s bantam AAA boys team at 1:30 p.m., in the other game of the day.
