CANADA MOVES TO 2-0 AT 4 NATIONS CUP

LEKSAND, SWEDEN - Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL), Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, AB) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton, CWHL) scored in the first 8:07 of the game to help Canada beat Team USA 6-3 at the 4 Nations Cup on Thursday night.

Botterill opened the scoring when she tapped in a rebound off a shot by Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Minnesota, WWHL) at 2:55. Wickenheiser's goal came at 7:37. Just 30 seconds later, Apps scored to give Canada a 3-0 lead.

Team USA cut into the lead when Erika Lawler scored at 19:26.

But Canada regained its three-goal lead early in the second. Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL), who was named Canada's player of the game, scored on a breakaway at 1:02. Then, Colleen Sostorics (Kennedy, SK/Calgary, WWHL) took a shot from the point that got past USA goaltender Jessie Vetter. Sostorics' goal came in her 100th-career game with Team Canada. She became the 15th player to reach 100 games with the National Women's Team.

Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) broke in alone and scored a breakaway goal at 15:16 to make it 6-1 Canada.

Team USA scored the only two goals in the third, as Natalie Darwitz and Erika Lawler beat Sami Jo Small (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL). Small made 32 saves for the win.
