WEATHERSTON’S LAST MINUTE HEROICS GIVE TEAM BLACK A TIE

Kenora, ON – A goal in the final minute by Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON) salvaged a 5-5 tie for Team B (Black) against Team A (White) on Friday morning in Kenora. Weatherston’s tying goal came at 14:11 of the fifteen minute third period and gives Team Black eight points in the standings, only one behind Team Red, which leads the standings with nine points. Team White now stands at five points.

All of Friday’s games at the National Women’s Team Fall Festival are once again of the 4-on-4 variety. However, there are differences from the games played on Thursday: Periods are 15 minutes in length and there are no shootouts.

A crowd of over 650, mostly students from local schools, was in attendance for the first game of the day on Friday, at the Kenora Recreational Centre. Their enthousiasm carried over to the teams, as the game was a high-paced and exciting display.

Defenceman Britni Smith (Port Perry, ON) opened the scoring for Team Black, leaving the point to take a Hayley Wickenheiser pass and slide it between Robyn Rittmaster’s legs. But Team White evened the score less than one minute later, at 7:38, as Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB) took a Cherie Piper pass and fired a slapshot past Laura Hosier. In the dying seconds of the opening frame, Kerri Wallace came a fraction of an inch of putting Team White up by a goal, as her shot beat Hosier but caught the right post and stayed out. It was all square at 1-1 after the first period.

The second period was an entertaining one for the fans, as a total of six goals were scored but the result remained the same, a 4-4 tie through forty minutes. Goalscorers for Team White were Heather Logan (Napanee, ON), Botterill with her second, and Delaney Collins (Pilot Mount, MB). Team Black replied with goals by Sabrina Harbec (Montreal, QC), and Hayley Wickenheiser with two.

Meagan Walton (Calgary, AB) gave Team White the lead at 5:34, putting a Vicky Sunohara pass behind Laura Hosier. Team Black carried the play, but took almost the entire period to manage a tying goal. Correne Bredin’s shot from the point was stopped, but Weatherston was positioned in front of the net and knocked the rebound in to even the game at 5-5.
