Box Score | Kenora, ON – The National Women’s Team 2006 Fall Festival kicked off for real on Monday night with a first game at the Kenora Recreational Centre. The line of Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON), Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB) and Theresa Marchese (Brampton, ON) accounted for three of four Team White goals and seven points as Team White opened with an impressive 4-1 win over Team Black.

The first period was marked by seven power plays, but the best scoring chances came at even strength. Team White’s sixteen year old Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON) broke in alone on Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, QC) and seemed to have her beat, but St-Pierre stuck out her pad and thwarted another chance.

Team Black responded in kind with a partial breakaway from Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC) but it was Robyn Rittmaster’s turn to make the big save. The pride of Halifax, NS added a great save for Team White late in the period, with a toe save off of Sarah Vaillancourt’s shot to preserve the scoreless tie.

In the second, it was all Team White. Piper opened the scoring, sent in on a breakaway by Botterill and sliding the puck between St-Pierre’s legs. Only nine seconds later, Team White made it 2-0. Piper set up Theresa Marchese (in the slot and her shot beat St-Pierre.

Heather Logan (Napanee, ON) made it 3-0 for Team White on a power play, with a quick wrist shot that beat St-Pierre over her right shoulder. Midway through the second frame, both teams changed goaltenders with Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON) taking over for St-Pierre and Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC) coming in for Rittmaster.

Team Black made a game of it in the final period, while shorthanded, as Gina Kingsbury scored from in close on Labonté. But Team White was back ahead by three goals four minutes later, as Piper added a second goal, with Botterill getting her third assist of the game.

Team A (White) is back on the ice Tuesday night, facing off against Team C (Red) which is led by Head Coach Nancy Wilson and assistant coaches Lisa Jordan and Jim Fetter.
