TEAM CANADA WRAPS UP THREE GAME SERIES WITH A 6-2 WIN OVER SWEDEN

CALGARY, AB – Team Canada faced Sweden for the third and final time in four nights after taking the first two by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.

Sweden came out of the gate looking like the hungrier of the two teams. Despite Canada’s four power play opportunities, it was Sweden who carried a 2-0 lead into the second period. Katarina Timglas opened the scoring at the half way mark of the opening period as the Canadian defenseman was unable to contain her at the side of the net. Sweden then increased its lead to 2-0 when Maria Rooth sprung loose on a short handed breakaway and beat Canadian net minder Kim St-Pierre low on the stick side.

For the first time in well over a year, team Canada found itself down by two goals in an international game. Canada came out with a vengeance in the second period as Caroline Ouellette fired a bullet from the blue line on the power play past a screened Kim Martin in net for Sweden. Three minutes later, Canadian forward Cherie Piper caused a turnover deep in Sweden’s zone on the penalty kill and hit Gillian Apps with the puck in the slot to tie things at 2-2. Canada took a 3-2 lead when rookie sensation Meghan Agosta tipped a point shop from Caroline Ouellette with five minutes remaining in the second period.

Just three minutes into the third Canada had increased its lead to 5-2. Cherie Piper scored a power play goal 40 seconds into the period, and Katie Weatherston followed that up with another power play goal minutes later, both players with their third points of the game. Canada capped off the game with another power play goal for a 6-2 victory as Danielle Goyette was the beneficiary on the doorstep as she netted her 102nd career international goal.

Canada will play the Calgary Flames Midget AAA team on Friday night at Father David Bauer at 9pm to simulate the Olympic semi-final.
