TEAM CANADA TAKES GAME TWO VS. SWEDEN WITH A 6-2 WIN

CANMORE, AB – Team Canada faced Sweden for the second game in as many nights, this time in Canmore, AB in front of a capacity crowd of over 1,000.

Canada opened the scoring when Caroline Ouellette jumped on a rebound after Swedish goalie Cecilia Anderson made the initial stop on a Jayna Hefford breakaway. Katie Weatherston increased Canada’s lead to 2-0 when she received a pass from Meghan Agosta on a 2 on 1 and buried it past a sprawled out Swedish goalie.

Jayna Hefford added a power play goal on a feed from Cherie Piper to put Canada up 3-0. Kelly Bechard fired one from the slot past Anderson for Canada’s fourth goal. Sweden’s Pernilla Winberg scored on a weird play. Charline Labonte made the initial saves, but the rebound came out and bounced in off a player streaking towards the net to bring Sweden to within three. Canada regained its four goal lead when Meghan Agosta pounced on a rebound after a Katie Weatherston shot to give Canada a 5-1 lead.

Danielle Goyette made history in the third period as she registered her 200th career international point, only the second play in Canadian history to achieve this milestone (the other being Hayley Wickenheiser). The goal was set up by longtime team mate Cassie Campbell at 5:08 of the third to give Canada a 6-1 lead. Sweden replied with their second goal as Maria Rooth came down the right wall and wired a shot that found the inside of the far post on Charline Labonte to bring it to within 6-2, but that was as close as they would get.

Canada will take a day of rest on Monday before returning to the ice on Tuesday to face Sweden at Father David Bauer Arena at 3:30pm MT.
