TEAM CANADA OPENS UP THREE GAME SERIES VS. SWEDEN WITH 6-0 VICTORY

CALGARY, AB – Team Canada hosted Sweden in the first of three games in four nights at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday evening. This is also the first game of a five game Olympic simulated schedule for Canada’s National Women’s Team, which will play games at the same times with the same days off in between games as Canada will face at the Olympics.

Canada opened the scoring following a goal mouth scramble, as Hayley Wickenheiser was able to slip one by Swedish goaltender Kim Martin at 8:16 of the opening period. Jayna Hefford increased Canada’s lead to 2-0 less than a minute later. Canada outshot Sweden 18-6 in the first period, despite falling behind early 3-0 on shots to Sweden.

Kelly Bechard scored off a banked shot from the end boards as she buried it past Martin, who was still on the other side of the net to put Canada up 3-0. Sarah Vaillancourt scored the only power play goal of the night on a perfect shot that beat Martin high on the glove side to give Canada a solid 4-0 lead. Despite giving up two more goals in the period, Kim Martin was under siege as she faced an amazing 25 shots in the second period alone.

Canada’s fifth goal was a historic marker as defenceman Tessa Bonhomme scored her first ever international goal for the senior national team when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle past the Swedish netminder at 9:31 of the third. Bechard added her second of the night which turned out to be Canada’s last as they finished with a 6-0 victory.

Kim St-Pierre made 13 saves in her 20th career international shutout, and Kim Martin made 57 saves in the loss for Sweden.

The two teams meet again Sunday in Canmore, AB before rounding out the three games series on Tuesday.
