TEAM CANADA STARTS WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER TEAM FINLAND

CALGARY, AB – Team Canada played their first game in preparation of the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Canada’s Centralized Women’s team faced off against Team Finland after the Finnish squad had spent the past week training in Calgary and playing a series of games against Canada’s Under-22 team.

Canadian goalie Kim St-Pierre got the start in net, which is her 50th career international game, a first for any Canadian goalie. Canada broke open the scoring on a pretty two-on-one play as Meghan Agosta slid a cross ice pass to Gina Kingsbury who buried it past the Finnish net minder. Canada scored 37 seconds later when veteran forward Danielle Goyette scored on a breakaway to give the host team a 2-0 first period lead.

In the second period, Canada continued to play strong as they took a commanding 5-0 lead after goals from Meghan Agosta, Katie Weatherston, and Danielle Goyette scoring her second of the night.

Canada added one more goal in the third period, Meghan Agosta’s second of the night, to give Canada a 6-0 victory over Finland. Kim St-Pierre made 10 saves earning her 17th career shut-out. Gina Kingsbury finished with 1 goal and 3 assists.

Canada will play three games against the Canadian Under-22 squad before traveling to Finland to play in the 2005 Four Nations Cup with Sweden, USA, and host-Finland next week.
