PERRY LEADS CANADIANS TO WIN OVER GERMANY IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WARM-UP

HAMBURG, Germany – Forward Corey Perry had two goals and an assist to power Canada to a 4-1 win over Germany in an exhibition warm-up for the 2010 IIHF World Championship, which is set to begin for the Canadians on Saturday.

Linemates Steven Stamkos and Rene Bourque also scored for Canada on Tuesday, while Chris Mason earned the win in net.

“We failed on the balanced scoring department tonight,” Canadian coach Craig MacTavish said with a chuckle. “We had other opportunities. We had some great individual performances from some of our defence, but that line did all of the scoring.”

The game was tied at 1-1 after the first period, with Canada taking the lead with a goal in the second and sealing the outcome with two in the third. Perry, Stamkos and Bourque each finished with three points.

“I thought we got progressively better as the game wore on,” MacTavish said. “We started a little shaky and the German team was ready for us, and played a very hard and quick game that posed some problems for us.”

He said the team is scheduled to practise on Wednesday, travel on Thursday and practise again on Friday before opening the tournament against Italy in Mannheim, Germany, on Saturday.

Canada has won the tournament 24 times, but has finished second to Russia in each of its last two attempts, with its most recent title coming in 2007. The Russian side has been bolstered with the additions of stars such as Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk.

“There are lots of reasons to be leery,” MacTavish said. “But at the same time, we've got lots of work to do before we get to the Russians – as they do. And, hopefully, we'll continue to grow and develop as a team to the point where we'll beat them.”
