FUCALE AND JARRY SHARE SHUTOUT AS RED BLANKS WHITE IN U18 CAMP OPENER

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Zachary Fucale (Rosemère, Que./Halifax, QMJHL) and Tristan Jarry (Delta, B.C./Edmonton, WHL) combined for a 21-save shutout as Red drew first blood at Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp with a 3-0 win over White on Saturday night.

Red jumped out to an early two-goal lead thanks to goals from Nick Ritchie (Orangeville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) and Shea Theodore (Aldergrove, B.C./Seattle, WHL), who scored 2:33 apart midway through the opening frame.

After outshooting White 10-7 in the first period, Red held an 11-6 advantage in period two, although neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame.

Both teams changed goaltenders midway through the second, with Jarry replacing Fucale for Red, and Eric Comrie (Edmonton, Alta./Tri-City, WHL) replacing Spencer Martin (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, OHL) in the White goal.

Brent Pedersen (Arthur, Ont./Kitchener, OHL) rounded out the scoring with a power play goal midway through the third period for Red, which outshot White 12-8 in the final 20 minutes, and 33-21 overall.

The two teams are back on the ice Sunday night at the MasterCard Centre for the second of three intrasquad games (7 p.m. ET), before wrapping up camp with the third and final contest on Monday morning (11:30 a.m. ET).

Following Monday’s game, 22 players will be selected for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team, which will attempt to win a fifth consecutive gold medal at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, Aug. 13-18 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic.
