SCHWARTZ’S PAIR LEADS RED TO INTERSQUAD WIN

CALGARY, Alta. – He may be the only Junior A player at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, but Jaden Schwartz proved on Sunday night that he belongs.

Schwartz (Wilcox, Sask./Notre Dame, SJHL) scored a pair of goals, both set up by linemates Christian Thomas (Toronto, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) and Cédrick Henley (Val-d’Or, Que./Val-d’Or, QMJHL), as Team Red earned the first intersquad win of camp with a 5-4 victory over Team White.

Schwartz’s goals were sandwiched between markers from Tyler Toffoli (Scarborough, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) and Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) as Red built a two-goal lead after 40 minutes and held off a late White rally.

Mark Stone (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) had the other goal for Red, while John McFarland (Richmond Hill, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) added a pair of assists in the win.

Stone’s goal with 7:38 to go gave Red a seemingly-insurmountable three-goal advantage, but White struck back with goals from Gabriel Desjardins (Montreal, Que./Halifax, QMJHL) and Ryan Harrison (Kelowna, B.C./Prince Albert, WHL) to cut the lead to one in the dying seconds before falling short.

Brad Ross (Lethbridge, Alta./Portland, WHL) and Brett Connolly (Prince George, B.C./Prince George, WHL) also found the back of the net for White, albeit in a losing cause. Connolly added a pair of assists to finish as the game’s high scorer with three points.

The teams return to the ice at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena on Monday night (7 p.m. MT) for the second of three intersquad games.
