Game Summary

Canada 5 - Slovakia 2

CANADIAN POWERPLAY SPARKS OPENING WIN AT DEUTSCHLAND CUP

MANNHEIM, GERMANY – Justin Papineau (Ottawa, ON) scored twice and added an assist and Richie Regehr (Rosthern, SK) had a goal and two helpers as Canada’s National Men’s Team opened the 2008 Deutschland Cup with a 5-2 win over Slovakia on Friday.

Canada scored four of its five goals on the powerplay and outshot the Slovaks 47-17 in a game it dominated from start to finish.

Canada’s National Men’s Team is made up of Canadian players playing professionally in Germany, as well as one from the Austrian league.

The Canadians held a whopping 20-8 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period, and hit the scoreboard first when Richie Regehr connected on the powerplay just past the five-minute mark of the frame.

The Slovaks fought back to tie it on a goal from Ivan Kolozvary just over three minutes later, but Papineau made sure the Canadians had the lead heading to the intermission, converting on another man advantage.

The second period was much of the same, with Canada outshooting Slovakia 19-9, and again it was the Canadian powerplay that struck, as Pascal Trépanier (Gaspe, QC) made it 3-1 just 3:10 into the period.

Papineau pushed the lead to three just 2:40 later, scoring Canada’s only even-strength goal of the game, before Juraj Mikus got the lead back down to three for the Slovaks late in the period.

Down by a pair entering the third period, the Slovakian offence disappeared, failing to muster even one shot at Canadian netminder Fred Brathwaite (Ottawa, ON), who needed to make just 15 saves to record the victory.

Chris Herperger (Esterhazy, SK) rounded out the scoring with yet another powerplay goal seven minutes into the final period.

Nathan Robinson (Scarborough, ON) and Scott King (Saskatoon, SK) added a pair of assists each for the Canadians, who travel to Frankfurt for their second game of the tournament on Saturday against Switzerland (9 a.m. EST).
