Sweden Games
Friday, November 9, 2001
Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden - For the second straight game Team Canada outshot their opponents but were unable to gain victory falling to the tournament leading Czech Republic 3-1. Canada carried the play throughout the evening , outshooting the Czechs 42-22 and were clearly the better team during even strength play. Canada's best opportunity to tie the game came off a Dave MacLlwain penalty shot with 9:54 remaining in the game. MacLlwain made a great move to his forehand but the Czech goalie was able to recover and make the save to preserve the victory.

Greg Parks scored Canada's lone goal of the evening on a power play off a beautiful pass from Winnipeg Manitoba's , Mike Maneluk. In the third period, Dave MacLlwain was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up by the Czech goalie on a shorthanded breakaway. MacLlwain, a veteran of 501 National Hockey League games, created the scoring chance by driving hard to net and forcing the Czech goalie to take his feet out from under him. The Czech goaltender, Jiri Trvaj came up with his biggest save of the night foiling MacLlwain's bid to tie the game for Canada.

Team Czech Republic scored into an empty net with 11 seconds remaining in the game to seal the victory. Canada will conclude the Sweden Games tomorrow with an afternoon game against Finland.

Tonight's, Canada vs Czech Republic was the only game of the day following yesterdays doubleheader that saw Finland defeat Russia 4-2 and the Czech Republic beat Sweden in 2-1 in overtime.
