2001-02 National Men's Team

Game Summary

Spengler Cup
Friday, December 28, 2001
Davos, Switzerland

With the third win in three games o the tournament, Canada Selects have made the step for a qualification for the decisive final game. Again the Northern American squad made a strong impression by playing defensively secure and simple, but offensively with speed and ideas vs. a technical high skilled Czech team. Sparta, the Czech champion has only little chances to qualify for the final, because they lost vs. both runner ups, Davos and Canada Selects. The host and the winner of today?s game have both no defeats. With this win Canada Selects is definatley in the final! Even a defeat in the last game vs. the host team cannot pull them out from this place. Their aim is to recover the Cup lost in the defeat of the last final against Davos.

Both NHL players in this Canadian squad were outstanding. Patrick Desrochers, who began the NHL season with the Phoenix Coyotes and played four games had the second great apearance in Davos. After his shutout vs. Mannheim and 111 minutes without a goal against, he has a great Save Percentage record and a GAA of 0,5! He allowed only one goal in two games (the second match of the Spengler Cup Sebastien centomo played for Canada selects). For the first time in this week former Calgary Flames player Jamie Wright scored for the team with the Maple Leaf on the jersey. He striked after a very nice combination with Blair Betts and Dale McTavish.
