Hradec Kralove, CZ – Canada’s National Junior Team opened the 2002 World Junior Hockey Championship with a convincing 15-0 victory over France on Christmas Day, in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

Chuck Kobasew, of Osoyoos, BC, opened the scoring as Canada cashed in on it’s first power play. Scottie Upshall, of Fort McMurray, AB, made it 2-0, coming out of the penalty box to score on France’s netminder, Jerome Plumejeau. 17 year old Rick Nash added another, after some great work by Brad Boyes. Jay McClement, of Kingston, ON closed out the scoring in the first as Canada skated to a 4-0 lead.

Canada stormed out of the gates in the second as Jared Aulin, Garth Murray and Stephen Weiss scored to give Canada a commanding 7-0 lead mid-way through the game. Mike Cammalleri added a powerplay goal before Montreal native Dave Henderson, France’s head coach, made a goaltender switch as Plumejeau gave way to Landry Macrez. Brad Boyes welcomed Macrez to the fray with a goal at 15:37. Canada led 9-0 through 40 minutes.

Cammalleri added his second of the evening at 0:55 of the third. Until Cammalleri’s second goal, nine different players had accounted for all of Canada’s scoring. Upshall, Aulin, Weiss and Boyes tallied their second goals to stake Canada to a 14-0 lead mid-way through the third. Cammalleri completed the hat trick and the scoring for Canada. The native of Richmond Hill, ON also tied Dave Andreychuk’s 1983 record for most points in a game with seven points on three goals and four assists.
