The key player for Slovakia at the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship could well be Ladislav Nagy, who led his team in scoring last year at the championship with six goals and two assists for eight points.

This season, Nagy, a left winger, has been lighting up the scoreboard in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playing for the Halifax Mooseheads, where he is a teammate of Alex Tanguay, one of the players Canada was counting on to lead them.

A sixth-round selection (177th overall) by the St. Louis Blues in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Nagy has emerged as an apparent steal from that draft and could dazzle for the Slovaks at the Winnipeg tournament. His importance will be tested early in the tournament, since Slovakia their archrivals, the Czechs, on Dec. 26 in the tournament opener for both clubs. Then the Slovaks play Canada in the opening game for the host country on Dec. 27 in Brandon.

In their brief history of competing at the World Junior Hockey Championship, however, Slovakia has not been a top contender.
