OKANAGAN HOCKEY ACADEMY SHUTS OUT SAINT MARY’S ACADEMY; TEAM CANADA ALUMNA JENNIFER BOTTERILL DROPS CEREMONIAL PUCK

by Jared Gauthier

Winnipeg, Man. – Three-time Olympic gold medallist Jennifer Botterill dropped the puck during the opening ceremonies of the first-ever Female World Sport School Challenge, kicking off the last of six games Thursday.

Fresh off victories earlier in the day, a strong St. Mary’s Academy Flames faced off against the Okanagan Hockey Academy in a preliminary matchup and potential tournament playoff preview.

After 60 minutes though, it was the OHA to skate away with a 2-0 shutout win over the event’s host team.

Despite playing a tournament in Washington less than a week ago, the Okanagan Hockey Academy brought its A game to the ice in front of a crowd of hometown fans rooting for the opposition.

St. Mary’s seemed to lack a bit of discipline in the first period, racking up three penalties. Goaltender Annie Chipman (Winnipeg, Man.) kept them in the game, making 11 saves, and held the game scoreless after one.

The turning point of the game was early in the second period. Less than a minute in, Chipman was beat by a quick slapper from Okanagan forward Emily Clark (Saskatoon, Sask.). The Okanagan Hockey Academy squad played strong defence throughout the period, allowing the St. Mary’s Flames to only four shots and picking up six of their own.

Neither team left an ounce of energy in the dressing room in the third. The St. Mary’s Flames had 11 shots in the period. Okanagan Hockey Academy goaltender Michaela Logan (North Vancouver, B.C.) stopped all 24 of St. Mary’s Academy’s shots, going on to claim her first shutout of the tournament.

Okanagan Hockey Academy had four shots in the period, one of which was good for a goal from assistant captain Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.). Miller was awarded player of the game for Okanagan Hockey Academy, while St. Mary’s Academy defenceman Kate Mackenzie (Winnipeg, Man.) took home the honours for her team.

Players from the Okanagan bench jumped at the sound of the final buzzer. The St. Mary’s Flames weren’t able to grab the win and Okanagan’s winning streak is now sitting at two games during the early preliminary stages of the tournament.

Both teams continue action tomorrow. St. Mary’s Academy will be playing Edge School for Athletes at 9:30 a.m. CT and the Okanagan Hockey Academy will play Fort Frances High School at 9:45 a.m. CT.
