2008 National Women's Under-18 Championship

JENNER JUMPS ON LOOSE PUCK, SCORES IN DOUBLE OT FOR ONTARIO RED

NAPANEE, ON – Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga Chiefs, PWHL) scored 1:07 into the second overtime period to lift Team Ontario Red to a 2-1 win over Team Quebec in the gold medal game of the 2008 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Jenner’s goal came off a turnover in the neutral zone that led to a breakaway. Jenner quickly grabbed the puck and went in alone on Quebec’s Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Lynx d’Edouard-Montpetit), snapping the puck in and sending the Ontario bench into a frenzy.

“I had so many chances in this game,” Jenner said. “I was thinking ‘shoot’ when I had the breakaway because I messed up on a deke earlier.”

Ontario Red has won this tournament five straight times. The event has been held seven times since 1993, with the 1997 event including only one Ontario team. All other years, Ontario Red and Ontario Blue have been part of the draw.

Ontario opened the scoring against Quebec at 14:09 of the first period when Casandra Langan’s shot got past Quebec goaltender Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Lynx d’Edouard-Montpetit).

Ontario Red maintained its 1-0 lead until the 12-minute mark of the third period. With Quebec on a power play, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Blues de Dawson) scored from behind the net when she banked in the puck off the pad of Ontario Red goaltender Casie Seguin (Ingleside, ON/Ottawa Senators, PWHL).

The game was played before a standing-room only crowd at the Strathcona Paper Centre. All week, fans in Napanee packed the rink for what will go down as a truly memorable National Women’s Under-18 Championship. More than 1,800 people watched the final live, with a national audience also taking in the game on TSN.
