HOBBS CAN’T BE BEAT IN SHOOTOUT

Charlottetown, PEI – Emily Hobbs (Fredericton, NB/St. Thomas, CIS) stopped all three Nova Scotia shooters in the shootout to lead New Brunswick to a 4-3 victory in the opening game of the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals at the CARI Complex.

Hobbs stopped 49 of 52 shots in regulation time and overtime as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia battled to a 3-3 tie after 65 minutes.

New Brunswick’s Emilie Arseneault (Rothesay, NB/Brewster Academy) went forehand to backhand and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Nova Scotia’s Jillian MacIsaac (Timberlea, NS/Saint Mary’s, CIS) for the only goal of the shootout.

New Brunswick took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Melinda Kaye (Colpitts Settlement, NB/Saint Mary’s, CIS) and Kim Deschênes (St. Quentin, NB/Team Atlantic) despite being outshot 12-9.

Nova Scotia cut into New Brunswick’s lead at 8:32 of the second, when Jocelyn LeBlanc (Moncton, NB/Dalhousie, CIS) scored on a rebound. New Brunswick made it 3-1 just over two minutes later on a goal by Renee Edison (Gander, NL/St. Thomas, CIS).

It appeared New Brunswick would take a 3-1 lead into the third, but Kori Cheverie (New Glasgow, NS/Saint Mary’s University) scored with 25.5 seconds for Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia tied the game at 4:30. Jayne Knowles (Newport, NS/Dalhousie, CIS) scored to send the game to extra time.

New Brunswick earned two points for the shootout win, while Nova Scotia took one point for the shootout loss.
