LATE GOAL LIFTS NOVA SCOTIA TO WIN OVER MANITOBA

Charlottetown, PEI – It appeared the game was headed for overtime.

But Zoë Launcelotte (Halifax, NS/Saint Mary’s) of Team Nova Scotia wouldn’t allow that. Launcelotte scored her second goal of the game with 95 seconds to play to give her club a 3-2 victory on Thursday at the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals.

With the win, Nova Scotia finished the round-robin at 1-1-0-1 and with four points, which puts the team into second place for the time being. Nova Scotia, Manitoba (1-2-0-0), New Brunswick and PEI will all move on to Friday’s semi-finals, with the final seedings to be determined after Thursday’s game between New Brunswick and PEI.

In the Nova Scotia-Manitoba game, Nova Scotia took a 2-0 lead early in the first, on goals by Michelle Long (Antigonish, NS/St. FX Alumni) at 1:48 and Zoë Launcelotte (Halifax, NS/Saint Mary’s) at 2:34.

Following a scoreless second period, Manitoba tied the game in the third on goals by Aimee Collins (Pilot Mount, MB/Westman Selects) and Ashley Jaffray (Olds, AB/Prairie Fire).

Manitoba outshot Nova Scotia 34-26. Nova Scotia’s goaltender, Jillian MacIsaac (Timberlea, NS/Saint Mary’s, CIS), stopped 32 shots for the win.
