Nova Scotia faced off against Manitoba in their qualifying game of the Women’s Nationals on Saturday.  Manitoba came from behind late in the game to beat Nova Scotia 4-3 in round robin play on Thursday.

The game started with end-to-end action. Manitoba got into penalty trouble midway into the first.  Nova Scotia took advantage when Ellen Wright broke down the side, making a perfect pass to Tara Dunn.  Dunn one-timed it; picking the corner for a 1-0 NS lead.

Nova Scotia carried the momentum after the Dunn goal.  5 minutes later, a classic 3 way play put NS ahead 2-0.  Ellen Wright broke down the side, passing the puck to Jayne Knowles.  Knowles instantly fed the puck to Kori Cheverier who one-timed it behind the Manitoba goalie (Pam May).

Nova Scotia continued to press into the second period.  Manitoba picked up the pace with a power play opportunity 9 minutes in.  Jocelyn Collins spotted Sara Cowling breaking up the side and went tape-to-tape.  Cowlings fired a rocket.  The NS goalie (Nicole Doucett) made the save but Ashley Van Aggelen was perfectly positioned to bang in the rebound.

Both sides traded offensive opportunities for the remainder of the second.  Nova Scotia regained their 2 goal lead with just over a minute to play in the second.  Suzanne Fenerty hit the goal post on a shot from the point.  Tara Dunn was there to tap in the rebound.  Melissa Welton also got a helper on the goal.

Manitoba was quick to answer.  There was a scramble in front of the NS goal.  Trish Faurschou grabbed the puck from behind the net, skated out around the corner, making a bee line for the net, scoring with 38 seconds to play in the second period.  Shelley Cockerill and Laura MacMillan assisted on Faurschou’s goal.

Both teams came out on fire in the third period.  Nova Scotia increased their lead to 2 when Brittany Haverstock fired a sizzler from the blue line that was in the net before anyone knew it.  Tara Dunn picked up the assist.

Nova Scotia put the icing on-the-cake late in the third on another classy tic-tac-toe passing play.  Katylin Morton made a quick pass to Tara Dunn.  Dunn instantly redirected the puck to Kori Cheverier; who one-timed, picking the bottom corner for a 5-2 victory.

Manitoba took it to Nova Scotia late in the game but couldn’t beat Nicole Doucett.

Katylin Morton was honored Player-of-the-Game for Nova Scotia while Ashley Van Aggelen got the honors for Manitoba.
