Game number 21 at the ESSO Women’s Nationals was a ‘Battle of the Rockies’ as Team British Columbia and Team Alberta faced off to secure the fourth spot in Pool ’A’. The job on minding the British Columbia net was given to  Ashley Mayr and she proved to be up for the assignment as she turned aside several scoring chances by a determined Alberta team. Alberta came out flying in the first, out shooting British Columbia 12  to 5.  Alberta was set back on their heals at the 6:25 mark of the first when British Columbia’s Savannah Smith scored a shorthanded goal when she stole the puck in front of Alberta’s net and fired the puck in the top corner behind Alberta net minder Tasha Sherbanuk putting BC on the scoreboard.

In the second period British Columbia buckled down to the job at hand and evened the shots on goal midway through the second. With minutes left in the second, Alberta’s defencemen Erin Gray took Alberta’s first penalty of the game. Alberta battled through the penalty as a determined British Columbia power play cycled the puck in their zone. As the penalty expired Alberta fed a lead pass to teammate Erin Gray as she left the penalty box to give her a breakaway. British Columbia’s net minder, Ashley Mayr stood her ground and turned aside the scoring attempt.

In the third, both teams came out determined to close the door. The play was end to end throughout the remainder of the game. In the middle of the period British Columbia took their first penalty allowing Alberta’s powerplay to go to work. Under intense pressure from Erin Smith, of Team Alberta, who produced several good scoring chances throughout the game which earned her the ESSO player of the game for the Alberta squad, team British Columbia stood their ground and managed to kill the penalty. Solid goaltending by British Columbia’s, Ashley Mayr earned her the ESSO player of the game for her team. The game ended with a score of 1 to 0 in favour of  British Columbia.
