Newfoundland & Labrador Win Close One Over Prince Edward Island

Newfoundland and Labrador played against Prince Edward Island Thursday morning at the Canadian Women’s Nationals. These two teams last met in 2002 with PEI coming out on top with a 1-0 win.

NL continued their momentum from the previous game taking it to PEI in the early going.  NL scored 3 minutes into the game when Sally Lavers spotted Joanne Eustace breaking up the side.  Lavers made the perfect pass, Eustice exploded in a burst of speed going deep in the PEI end and finding Meghan Frizzell alone in the slot.  Frizzle let go a quick shot that found the back of the net.

It was midway through the first when Victoria Thistle caused a turnover in the neutral zone, put on an amazing burst of speed, making a nifty move to split the PEI defense, picking the top corner for a 2-0 NL lead. Joanne Eustice and Victoria Newhook assisted on Thistle’s goal.  Jennifer Pollett displayed a great individual effort 3 minutes later; splitting the PEI defense and scoring to make it 3-0.

Momentum switched to PEI late in the first period.  Kate Gaudet fired a bullet from the blue line that found the back of the NL net.  Genna Phelan and Jennifer Sullivan got the assists.

PEI dominated the second period but Mallory Jagoe did a fantastic job between the pipes for NL.  PEI finally beat Jagoe late in the second when Kayla Coady out-muscled the NL defense on a scramble.  Kate Guadet and Brenda Hemphill assisted on the play.

The third period featured end-to-end action. Victoria Thistle scored a power play goal for NL midway into the third.  Thistle was set-up by Jennifer Pollett and Joanne Eustace giving NL a 4-2 lead.

PEI answered 2 minutes later.  Mary MacKinnon won a face-off in the NL zone.  She quickly fed the puck to Genna Phelan who found the empty corner.  PEI continued to pressure for the remainder of the third but couldn’t score to tie the game.

Kate Gaudet was named Player of the Game for PEI while Jennifer Pollett got the honors for NL.
