Everyone in attendance was anticipating a great match up between these two Ontario teams.

With the talents of Janya Hefford with seven goals and seven assists and Vicky Sunohara with four goals and six assists in three games plus goalie Lisa Moreland giving up three goals in 60 minutes of play for Team Ontario. Then you add the likes of defenceman Cheryl Pounder with five goals and one assist plus sniper Haley Irwin with four goals and one assist from Host Ontario Goalie Kendra Fisher who has yet to give up a goal in 60 minutes of play has made for some exciting action.

Team Ontario came into this contest with a perfect record of 3-0 having 29 goals for and only 4 against. Easily defeating AB 13-0 then doubling Quebec 6-3 on opening day of the Women’s National Hockey Championships. In their first game in today’s competition Team Ontario skated to an impressive 10-1 victory over BC.

Ontario Host Team on the other hand supports a record of 1-1 with 17 goals for and only 2 against after an opening day win over AB 15-0. Then losing earlier this morning to Quebec 4-2.

38 second into the contest Team Ontario’s found themselves down a player after Jayna Hefford received a penalty for high sticking.

Team Ontario struck first when Coley Dosser fired a shot from the top of the circle, which was originally stopped by Kendra Fisher but dropped to the ice and rolled in behind her. Both Jayna Hefford and Vicky Sunohara assisted on the play at 15:29.

Heather Logan tied the game with her first goal of the tournament after she cut across the front of the net and sliding the puck into the open corner. Allison Edgar set up the play at the 10:47 mark.

Host Team Ontario ran into some penalty problems late in the period and ended the period down two players.

In the second period Team Host killed off the 15 seconds remaining in the first penalty but it didn’t take long before Jayna Hefford scored on the power play just 53 seconds into the second period when Kerry Welland set her up in the slot.

Jayna Hefford also had a great shorthanded opportunity on a breakaway when she picked up the puck at her blue line and skated down and tried to deke Kendra Fisher who stood her ground.

Both teams have been pretty evenly matched in the first two periods.

Starting the third period both teams played with caution. It wasn’t until the 15:55 mark when Jayna Hefford fired a bullet from the top of the left face off circle that beat Kendra cleanly. Vicky Sunohara earned an assist on the play.

You could see the tempers started to flare as both teams became move physical as the period was drawing to a close.

Team Host pulled their goalie with just over a minute remaining. A penalty was assessed to Team Ontario with 52 second showing on the clock. Team Host called a time out but was unable to get the puck by goalie Lisa Moreland who played a solid game.

Host Ontario went 0/6 on the power play.

Team Ontario went 1/3 on the power play.
