The most anticipated match up of opening day at the Esso Women’s Nationals was the matchup between Team Ontario and Team Quebec.   This game featured four women from the 2005 IIHF Worlds Women team, goalie Charline Labonte and forward Gina Kingsbury from Quebec and from team Ontario forwards Jayna Hefford and Vicky Sunohara.

Quebec outshot and outplayed Ontario in the first half of the first period.  All that changed when Vicky Sunohara opened the scoring for Ontario on assists from Jayna Hefford and Coley Dosser.  This line went on to score again as Dosser scored at the 6:21 mark.  Picking up the assists were Jayna Hefford and Vicky Sunohara. The Sunohara, Hefford, Dosser line went on to contribute 11 points by games end.

Quebec Annie Desrosiers scored late in the period to cut the Ontario lead 2 – 1. Angela Ruggiero picked up the assist.

Ontario scored 3 unanswered goals to take a 5 – 1 lead in the second period.  Kristy Zamora notched 2 of the goals while Vicky Sunohara scored one.  Picking up the assists were Kathleen Kauth with 2, Jayna Hefford, Coley Dosser,  Brooke Bradburn and Allyson Fox.  Late in the period Catherine Bertrand scored from Gina Kingsbury to close the period with the score 5 – 2 for Ontario.

Third period the two teams exchanged goals.  Hefford scored for Ontario from Kerry Weiland and Coley Dosser.  Quebec’s goal was an unassisted goal by Cathy Chartrand putting the final score at Ontario 6 – Quebec 3.

Ontario’s Charline Labonte stopped all but 3 of the 33 shots on net while Lisa Moreland faced 39 shots on net for Quebec.

Player of the Game for Ontario was Vicky Sunohara and for Quebec it was Annie Desrosiers.
