2013 World Sport School Challenge

Germany 3 - Edge School 0

PROSKE MAKES 33 SAVES AS GERMANY WINS BRONZE WITH 3-0 WIN OVER EDGE

CALGARY, Alta. – Florian Proske made 33 saves for the shutout, Maxi Kammerer netted two goals and Stefan Loibl scored the game-winner and added an assist, as Germany defeated Edge School 3-0 to capture the World Sport School Challenge Prep Division bronze medal on Wednesday.

The loss for Edge marks the second consecutive year they have lost in the WSSC bronze medal game, as they dropped a 5-2 decision to Slovakia last year.

Germany controlled the majority of the play in the first period, outshooting Edge 12-4; however, they could not get the puck past Edge goaltender Jesse Shenton.

The Germans opened the scoring on a short-handed goal from Loibl, 11:19 into the middle stanza, as Loibl was able to take advantage of a turnover at the Edge blue-line, break in all alone, deke forehand to backhand and slip the puck past Shenton. Germany struck again just 1:45 later, as Kammerer finished off a two-on-one passing play, giving the Germans a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

There were plenty of scoring chances in the third period, but neither team could find the back of the net as Shenton stopped 10 shots in net for Edge, giving him a total of 34 saves on the game, while Proske continued his perfect-game, also making 10 saves in the period en route to the shutout. Kammerer added his second goal of the game, this time an empty-netter late in the game, sealing the victory for Germany.

Germany went 0-3 in the preliminary round, which included a 6-3 loss to Edge, but was able to pull-off a big 7-3 upset over the Okanagan Hockey Academy in the quarter-finals, before dropping a 4-2 decision to Czech Republic in the semifinals. Edge closed out the preliminary round with a 1-2 record and then got past the Banff Hockey Academy by a score of 6-3 in the quarter-finals; however, they were crushed 7-1 in their semifinal game against Shattuck-St. Mary’s.
