2013 World Sport School Challenge

Czech Republic 4 - Germany 2

CZECHS ADVANCE TO GOLD MEDAL GAME AFTER 4-2 WIN OVER GERMANY

CALGARY, Alta. – Vitek Vanek made 30 saves and Michal Kovaík scored the game-winner as Czech Republic remained unbeaten at the World Sport School Challenge with a 4-2 win over Germany in a Prep Division semifinal game, setting up a gold medal match-up against Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Jiri Smejkal scored the lone goal in the first period, taking a cross-crease feed from Lukas Vopelka and burying the shot in the back of the net, marking the fourth straight game the six-foot-two forward has scored a goal, giving the Czechs a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Filip Kuták banged home a rebound just under eight minutes into the second period, making it a two goal lead for the Czechs. Maxi Kammerer responded for Germany 1:36 later, knocking in a rebound of his own to make it 2-1, however, with 4:02 left in the frame, Kovaík capped off a pretty passing play for the Czechs, giving them a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Kammerer got Germany within a goal at the midway point of the third period with his second goal of the game, but that was as close as they would get, as Petr Tejral added an insurance-goal for the Czechs to seal the 4-2 victory.

Czech Republic will face-off with Shattuck-St. Mary’s in the Prep Division gold medal game on Wednesday (8:00 p.m. MT), in a battle of unbeaten teams. Germany will square-off with Edge School in the bronze medal game (4:00 p.m. MT), Edge defeated Germany by a score of 6-3 on Day 1.
