2008 World Junior A Challenge

Canada West 9, Augustana College 2

REID’S FOUR POINTS LEAD CANADA WEST TO WIN IN WJAC EXHIBITION

Brodie Reid (Delta, BC/Burnaby, BCHL) scored a hat trick and added an assist and Derek Grant (Abbotsford, BC/Langley, BCHL) had a pair of goals of his own as Canada West romped to a 9-2 win over Augustana University College on Wednesday night in a 2008 World Junior A Challenge pre-tournament contest in Camrose, AB.

Reid scored once in the first period and twice in the second as Canada West held period leads of 5-0 and 8-2 en route to victory.

Michael MacDonald (Thunder Bay, ON/Ft. William, SIJHL), Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, SK/Notre Dame, SJHL), Steven Seigo (Edenwold, SK/Bonnyville, AJHL) and Matt Mackay (Calgary, AB/Calgary Canucks, AJHL) also scored for Canada West, who got a pair of powerplay goals in four opportunities, both coming off the stick of Grant. Reid’s second goal was a shorthanded marker.

Ben Starbuck and Chris Dawn scored the goals for Augustana, who was outshot 50-22 in the loss. Colin Stebner (21 saves) and David Ritz (20) split the goaltending duties for the Vikings.

All three of Canada West’s goaltending hopefuls saw 20 minutes of action, with Kevin Genoe (Qualicum Beach, BC/Prince George, BCHL) (six saves) and Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, SK/Humboldt, SJHL) (four) pitching shutouts in their period of play. Aaron Dell (Airdrie, AB/Calgary Canucks, AJHL) was the busiest of the three, turning aside 10 of 12 shots in the second period.

Canada West – the two-time defending gold medalist at the World Junior A Challenge – has one more pre-tournament game on the schedule, traveling to Viking, AB on Friday night for a rematch of the past two gold medal games against Canada East.
