CONTACTS INTO SEMIFINALS AFTER WILD WIN OVER OIL KINGS

LEDUC, Alta. – Kolten Olynek scored twice in a five-goal third period and Dawson Leedahl netted the first two of Saskatoon’s four power play goals as the Contacts clinched a spot in Saturday’s semifinals at the 2012 TELUS Cup with a 7-5 win over the Leduc Oil Kings on Thursday night.

The Contacts’ victory rounds out the weekend combatants – Saskatoon will join Collège Esther-Blondin, Leduc and Red Deer as the final four, more than seven months after 148 teams started the road to the TELUS Cup.

Rourke Chartier, Reid Gardiner and Austin Calladine had the other goals for Saskatoon (2-1-1), which erased deficits of 1-0 and 4-2 and scored five times in a span of 16:17 in the final frame to escape with a victory.

Down 4-2 after Cole MacDonald scored for Leduc just 1:44 into the third period, the Contacts’ special teams took over – Olynek scored his first on a power play to get Saskatoon within one, Chartier tied the game shorthanded and Gardiner converted on another man advantage to give the Contacts their first lead since 2-1.

Hayden Dawes’ second goal of the game tied it for Leduc (2-2) with 4:32 to go, but Calladine scored the winner with 1:24 left and Olynek capped a crazy third period – the teams combined for seven goals in the final 20 minutes – with an empty-netter in the final seconds to ice the win.

Doug Morris and Robert Cain also scored for the Oil Kings, who dropped their second in a row after opening the tournament with back-to-back victories.

With semifinal seeding still up for grabs, the Contacts wrap up the preliminary round against Moncton on Friday afternoon (1 p.m. MT), while Leduc closes against the unbeaten Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin in the round robin finale (4:30 p.m. MT).
