2012 TELUS Cup

Moncton Flyers 5 - Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin 9

STORTO’S HAT TRICK HELPS PHÉNIX TOP FLYERS, REMAIN UNBEATEN

LEDUC, Alta. – David Storto scored a hat trick for the second time in three days, helping the Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin stay perfect at the 2012 TELUS Cup with a 9-5 win over the Moncton Flyers on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory all but locks up a semifinal berth for the Phénix, which would need a catastrophic final two days of preliminary round play to miss out on Saturday’s final four match-ups.

Laurent Dauphin scored twice, including a first-period penalty shot, and added two assists to temporarily take over the tournament scoring with 10 points (six goals, four assists) in three games, while Tristan Tremblay had two goals of his own.

Kevin Deslauriers and David Bergeron scored the other goals for Collège Esther-Blondin (3-0), which has scored 21 times in its first three games.

Thomas Mansbridge led the offensive charge for Moncton (0-3), scoring twice, while Luc Eagle, Kyle Beckwith and Stephen Johnson added singles. The loss puts the Flyers in serious danger of missing the semifinals for the sixth time in seven appearances at the National Midget Championship; they have not played in the semis since their inaugural visit in 1977.

Collège Esther-Blondin looks for a fourth straight win when it takes on Red Deer on Thursday afternoon (4 p.m. MT), while Moncton tries again to get win No. 1 against Sudbury in the day’s early game (12:30 p.m. MT).
