2012 TELUS Cup

Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin 6 - Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves 2

FIVE FIRST-PERIOD GOALS LEAD PHÉNIX TO FIRST WIN

LEDUC, Alta. – David Storto scored three times in a span of 12:11 in the first period as part of a five-goal outburst to help the Phénix du Collège Esther-Blondin start its 2012 TELUS Cup with a 6-2 win over the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Monday afternoon.

The win pushed the Quebec Region’s undefeated streak in tournament openers to 14 games, dating back to New Liskeard’s 5-2 win over Collège Charles-Lemoyne at the 1997 tournament in New Glasgow, N.S.

Laurent Dauphin added a pair of goals for Collège Esther-Blondin (1-0), which opened the scoring 54 seconds in off the stick of Frédérik Gauthier, led 2-0 after 93 seconds thanks to Storto and chased Wolves goaltender Andrew Lefebvre after Dauphin’s first goal made it 4-0 at the 7:20 mark.

Ryan Erickson and Kyle Fransen scored the goals for the Wolves, who have been in this position before; Sudbury (0-1) lost its first game at the Central Regional tournament 7-1 to the Mississauga Rebels before rattling off six consecutive wins to book its trip to Leduc.

Outshot 18-7 in the first period, Sudbury came out firing in the second period, cutting a five-goal deficit down to three through 40 minutes. But Dauphin’s second goal of the game was the lone marker of the third period as the Phénix picked up the victory in its tournament debut.

Collège Esther-Blondin looks to move its record to 2-0 when it takes on Saskatoon in the early game on Tuesday (12:30 p.m. MT), while the Wolves take their second crack at win No. 1 against the host Leduc Oil Kings in the nightcap (7:30 p.m. MT).
