2009 TELUS Cup

Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa 4 - Notre Dame Hounds 6

HOUNDS SHOCK ROUSSEAU SPORTS, WILL PLAY FOR GOLD

SELKIRK, Man. – Down by one with time running out in their semifinal on Saturday afternoon, the Notre Dame Hounds turned to their award-winning blueliner and their resident Manitoban.

Jesse Pauls, named Top Defenceman at Friday night’s awards banquet, tied the game on a power play with 3:45 to go and Lucas Froese, the only player from Manitoba on the Hounds’ roster, gave them the lead 1:24 later, leading the West Region champions to a 6-4 win over the Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa and a spot in Sunday’s gold medal game (5 p.m. CT).

Notre Dame is the sixth-consecutive West Region champion to reach the final game at the National Midget Championship and will look on Sunday to join Brandon (2004), Saskatoon (2005) and Prince Albert (2006, 2007) as gold medalists from the west in the last six years.

The only undefeated team in round robin play, the Hounds looked to have the game in hand when Pat McGillis gave them a 3-1 lead early in the second period. But goals from Eliezer Sherbatov and Alexandre Lavoie pulled the Quebec champs even, and Sherbatov took advantage of a sloppy Notre Dame line change to give the Rousseau Sports their first lead at 4-3 with just six minutes to go, setting the stage for the Hounds’ comeback.

Bryce Milson, who earned his team’s Player of the Game nod, scored twice in the first period, while Zach Hodder ended any chance of a Laval-Bouarassa comeback by scoring into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining.

Thomas Martin scored the other goal for the Rousseau Sports, who will look to become the fifth-consecutive team from Quebec to win bronze on Sunday morning (11 a.m. CT).
