ROY’S LATE GOAL EARNS HOUNDS TIE WITH BUFFALOES
SELKIRK, Man. – It took a few tries, but the power play finally came through for the Notre Dame Hounds.
Alexandre Roy’s point shot eluded netminder Sam Brittain with the Hounds enjoying their fifth man advantage of the third period, earning Notre Dame a 4-4 tie with the Calgary Buffaloes on the opening day of the 2009 TELUS Cup on Monday.
Roy’s goal with 2:30 to go capped a wild, fast-paced game between two of the pre-tournament favourites – the Hounds led 2-1 after 20 minutes before the Buffaloes counted twice on the power play in the middle frame to help them take a 4-3 lead entering the final period.
Notre Dame captain Pat McGillis scored once and added two assists, while Player of the Game Francis Menard counted three helpers.
Carson Grolla and Jesse Pauls also scored for the Hounds, who played their first game at the National Midget Championship since defeating the St. Albert Eagles Raiders 5-3 in the bronze medal game of the 1990 Air Canada Cup in Sorel, Que.
Cody Irving, Greg Lamoureux, Chris Collins and Ryon Moser scored for the Buffaloes, while Brittain made 23 saves in picking up his team’s Player of the Game honours.
