2009 TELUS Cup

Hamilton Reps  4 -  Winnipeg Thrashers  5

ZAJAC’S FOUR POINTS HELP THRASHERS SURVIVE REPS

SELKIRK, Man. – On Sunday night, the spotlight in the Zajac household belonged to Travis, who scored the overtime winner for New Jersey in Game 3 of its NHL conference quarter-final against Carolina.

The attention shifted to younger brother Nolan on Monday, as the blueliner scored once – the eventual game-winner – and added three assists in the Winnipeg Thrashers’ 5-4 win over Hamilton on Day 1 of the 2009 TELUS Cup.

Zajac’s goal on a four-on-three with 6:24 to go gave the Thrashers a 5-3 lead, and the 2008 silver medalists withstood a final minute goal from Conor McLaughlin and a late rally by the Reps to earn their sixth-consecutive round-robin win at the National Midget Championship, dating back to last year.

Michael Hay scored twice and added an assist for Winnipeg, while Alex Kampen, the Thrashers’ surprise leader in playoff scoring, and Ryan Magalas added single goals.

Matt Carey, Arie Dendekker, Andrew Radjenovic also scored for Hamilton, which made its return to the national championship after an 18-year absence – it finished sixth at the 1991 Air Canada Cup in Calgary, Alta. Benjamin Walsh picked up Player of the Game honours for the Reps with a two-assist performance.
