BRONCOS ELIMINATE HOST COLTS, ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

CORNWALL, Ont. – Tory Allan scored the game-winning goal on a power play 13 minutes into the first period and assisted on Tanner Van De Sype’s insurance marker on the man advantage in the first minute of the third as the Humboldt Broncos advanced to the championship game of the 2008 RBC Cup with a 6-1 win over the Cornwall Colts on Saturday night.

Edward Gale added a pair of goals for the Broncos, who are one win away from their second National Junior A Championship, but will first have to get past the Camrose Kodiaks – the same team Humboldt beat for their only national title in 2003.

Tory Allan, Laurent Benjamin and Matthew Rintoul had the other goals for Humboldt, which is in the championship game for the third time in as many appearances; it lost to the Richmond Sockeyes in the 1987 final before beating Camrose.

Alain Joanette, looking to make his second consecutive appearance in the championship game after reaching the final with Prince George in 2007, scored the lone goal for Cornwall, which was outshot 30-21.

Justin Roethlinsgshoefer, who was pulled after allowing four goals on 34 shots in the Colts’ preliminary round loss to Humboldt, went the distance in the Cornwall goal, making 24 saves, while Taylor Nelson finished with 34 stops for the Broncos.

Gale was named Player of the Game for the Broncos, while Roethlingshoefer – who gathered the entire Cornwall team together for his acceptance photo – received the honour for the Colts.
