YORKTON TAKES BITE OUT OF DERBYS

The dog pound was the location of a true dog fight as both the Terriers and Debys were looking to advance to Sunday’s semi-final. On this night, much to the disappointment of the hometown fans, it was the Terriers who went into the opposition’s doghouse and made it their own.

If there were any doubts surrounding the nomination of Kris Korchinski as the Top Forward of the tournament at the annual awards banquet on Friday night, he quickly put them all to rest.

A threat to score any given time he hit the ice, Korchinski set the tone early showing just how explosive he can be when he notched two goals in the first five minutes of the game to give Yorkton a critical two goal lead early in Saturday night’s semi-final. On his first goal, Korchinski fooled Derbys netminder David Wilson with a quick wrap around that Wilson could not catch up to. Then less than three minutes later Korchinski out-muscled the Derbys defender and put it past Wilson blocker side for his second goal of the night at 4:30 of the first period.

Chris Cook who was received an elbow early in the first, left game after spending a few minutes on the bench. Injuries seem to have been Yorkton’s Achilles heal this tournament having lost several players to injury over the course of the event.

Ryan Silveira narrowed the lead to 2-1 at 15:41 of the second. After the initial shot, Silveira banged in the rebound over the shoulder of Brent Bothwell who was still in his butterfly position. However, that is all the offence the Derbys could muster as the Terriers played a solid defensive game after taking the early lead. Bothwell didn’t have to make many saves, but he made the big ones when he nedded to

Things boiled over after the final whistle as the teams exchanged words and heated arguments, but to their credit the officials took control and cooler heads prevailed.
