FWFN NORTHSTARS (Central) 2 vs. BURNABY EXPRESS (Pacific) 3 Semi Final By HockeyCanada.ca | BURNABY EXPRESS FULL STEAM AHEAD The Burnaby Express staged an improbable comeback with less than two minutes remaining in the third period. Down 2-0, the Express who were stumped by a hot goalie all night finally broke through Carter Hutton, the North Stars netminder … in a big way. Burnaby’s first goal came with one second remaining on their fourth power-play of the night with 1:53 remaining in the third. Mark Santorelli fired a shot that made its way past a screened Hutton who had no chance on the play. Then, with the game on the line, Burnaby’s top scorer, Kyle Turris, scored his team’s most important goal of the tournament with 11 seconds remaining. Trailing 2-1 and with the goalie pulled, Burnaby threw everything they had at the North Stars and finally caught a break when Turris fired one home from the point that beat Hutton high glove side. Turris’ goal sent the game to overtime then he set up the game winner at 13:41 of the first OT. Turris made a beautiful cross-ice pass to the tournament’s Most Sportsmanlike Player Mark Soares who fired it home. “It was an amazing feeling, especially after being down two goals and staging a comeback” said the game’s overtime hero, Soares. “It’s tough, we were thinking this could be the end but everyone stayed positive, worked hard and bared down to get the tying goal” The Fort William duo of Kory McEwan and Dennis Morrison, who was awarded the Tournament’s Top Scorer award on Friday night, have been impossible to keep off the score sheet thus far and Saturday afternoon was no different as they connected to give Fort William the early lead. After taking the feed from Morrison, McEwan came barreling down the left wing and after releasing a shot followed up un-touched and banged in his own rebound past Bryce Luker. Goaltender Carter Hutton stole the show in the second and third period stopping several point blank shots and breakaways. In total, Burnaby fired 34 shots at the Fort William goaltender in the final two periods. Fort William’s second goal of the came at 8:22 of the second period. Cory Silverson fired a shot from the point that made its way through traffic and past Luker. PLAYERS OF THE GAME: BURNABY: Kyle Turris GAME NOTES: McEwan scored in three straight games and extended his point streak to five games … Morrison assisted on the first goal to also extend his point streak to five games … Hutton faced a total of 47 shots … Turris, a 16 year old, has committed to the University of Wisconsin for the 2007 season … Burnaby has played in three overtime games compiling a 2-1 record |
