HOST TEAM: The Streetsville Derbys of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL) will look to repeat the championship performance of last year’s RBC Royal Bank Cup host team, the Weyburn Red Wings. After an early playoff exit, the Red Wings endured a long layoff before compiling a 5-1 tournament record en route to a National title. Despite an opening round loss to the Georgetown Raiders in this year’s OPJHL playoffs, the Derbys were one the league’s hottest teams in the second half of the season. Streetsville was 11-3-4 in its last 18 regular season games and 8-1-2 following the trade deadline acquisitions of forwards Mike Scheu and Brent Alexin from the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, as well as forward Steve Tamaridis from the Toronto Thunderbirds. Tamaridis was the team’s top scorer with 66 points in 44 games with both Streetsville and Toronto. Felice Turano finished fourth in OPJHL defenseman scoring with 49 points in 44 games and was second in the league with 214 penalty minutes. Goaltender David Wilson had a 2.91 goals against average and a .918 save percentage during the regular season.

Regular Season Record: 25-19-3-2 (6th in OPJHL’s West Division)
Playoff Record: 2-4 (lost in first round to Georgetown Raiders)
RBC Royal Bank Cup Titles: 0
Previous RBC Royal Bank Cup Appearances: 0

The Streetsville Derbys, proud hosts of the 2006 Royal Bank Cup, play in the West Division of the Ontario Provincial Jr. A. Hockey League. This season the Derbys record was 49-25-19-3-2 and with 53 points finished in sixth place, only 5 points out of third. The Georgetown Raiders, last year’s Dudley Hewitt Cup championships, defeated the Derbys in round one of the OPJHL playoffs. The 6 game series was a close fought, exciting match up. The Derbys enjoy a long history in the Ontario Hockey Association. The team first entered Junior competition at the Jr. C level in 1967. The team was formed as a Centennial project and the franchise moved up to Jr. B in 1970. The Derbys were highly successful and they claimed the OHA Central League championship 8 times between 1976 and 1986. The name “Derbys” is recognized as a very unique label in hockey. The first sponsor of the team manufactured Derby Dog Food and that original moniker has stayed on as the club looks forward to their 40th anniversary in 2007. The Streetsville Derbys have always been a small-town team and the players and staff alike look forward to competing on a Canada-wide stage!
