2005 RBC Cup

Central 2 Pacific 8

Semi-Final
May 14, 2005
Weyburn, SK

Killer instinct, anyone? The Camrose Kodiaks served notice that they’re serious about taking the RBC Royal Bank Cup back to Alberta with merciless 8-2 dismantling of the Georgetown Raiders in Saturday’s second semifinal.

Mason Raymond, Jason Roberts and Matt Boyd scored two goals apiece for the Alberta Junior Hockey League champs, who were actually outshot 38-34 by Georgetown. The Kodiaks parlayed 12 power plays into three goals, and move on to face the host Weyburn Red Wings in Sunday’s final.

Nine minutes into the game, the Raiders were outshooting the Kodiaks by a 7-1 margin, but a cross-checking penalty to Nick Harloff helped the Camrose offense get into gear. Shortly after the penalty ended, Logan Gorsalitz put a move on his defender and chipped the puck over to a streaking Raymond. The Kodiaks sniper punched the puck by Georgetown’s John Barrow for his third of the tournament.

The Raiders goaltender was hurt on the play and left the game, forcing backup Chris Hyk into action. Faced with adversity, the Raiders lost control of their emotions, taking three consecutive, overlapping penalties. Camrose’s Roberts took advantage, scoring his first of the game and second of the tournament on a two-man advantage to make it 2-0.

In the second, it was more of the same from the Raiders. Michael Nelson took a slashing penalty before the period was a minute old, and tournament MVP Travis Friedley made Georgetown pay, one-timing a long rebound past Hyk at 2:30. Less than three minutes later, Mason Raymond intercepted a waist-high saucer pass in the Raiders zone and batted it past Hyk before the startled goaltender knew what was happening.

Charles Amodeo scored for the Raiders at 6:19, but MacGregor Sharp (on yet another power play) and Matt Boyd answered quickly to make it 6-1, and it was all but over.

Camrose’s play in the third period was more conservative than Stephen Harper, but they still managed two more goals, from Boyd and Roberts. Matt Sweazy scored on Kodiaks backup Kirk Irving with 1:07 left.

Players of the game were Roberts of Camrose and Georgetown’s Charles Amodeo.
