THE 2005 RBC ROYAL BANK CUP OPENS IN WEYBURN, SK

WEYBURN, SK – The 2005 RBC Royal Bank Cup finally got under way in Weyburn, SK tonight as the host team faced the Manitoba League Champions, the Portage Terriers. The entire town was buzzing with anticipation as they have not had a game in Weyburn for two months after the Red Wings took an early exit in the Saskatchewan league playoffs.

The first period started with some big checks and glorious scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to capitalize as both Stefan Drew (Portage) and Brenden Cuthbert (Weyburn) looked sharp in net. Weyburn out shot Portage 11 to 5 including have the majority of power play opportunities with four.

Weyburn’s Jordan Stevenson scored the first goal of the game and the championship at 2:52 of the second period when he wired a shot through the legs of Drew from the top of the circle. The goal really brought the Weyburn crowd to life. Stevenson narrowly missed minutes later on a cross ice feed, but the Red Wings continued to carry the momentum for the rest of the period as they took it to the Terriers.

Both teams battled hard in the third as neither team wanted to surrender the next goal. Portage captain Colin Slobodian had a clear cut breakaway, but was denied by a red hot Cuthbert in net for the home town team. But Slobodian would get another chance with just 2:04 seconds remaining in the game, as the Portage captain converted on the power play to tie things at 1-1 and force overtime.

The first overtime went very quickly, but both teams looked tired. Neither team had any quality scoring chances, as the shots on net were Portage 2 to Weyburn 0. The first overtime is only ten minutes, followed by a flood and a 20 minute sudden death period.

The second extra period was as exciting as the come. Weyburn through everything at the Terriers, but could not get one by Drew. Portage’s Kent Merriam beat a Red Wing defender to the puck and jammed a bouncing puck passed Cuthbert with 5:04 remaining in the second overtime to clinch victory for the Terriers.

Players of the game were Andrew Jackman for Portage Terriers and Brenden Cuthbert for the Weyburn Red Wings.
