Colby Harris remembers watching the IIHF World Junior Championship every year with boarding school teammates from Upper Canada College in Toronto, Ont. This year, he ventured coast to coast just to get near the action.

Harris, a fourth-year political science student at the University of British Columbia, travelled from Vancouver, B.C., to be a media operations volunteer in Toronto, where he regularly works with the local and international media covering the tournament. It’s his first time away from home during the holiday season, but the opportunity to go behind the scenes was too valuable to pass up.

“One of the bigger reasons (why) I’m here is to get some experience, get my feet wet and see what it’s like to be part of a big tournament like this,” says Harris. “Being able to watch the pre-game skates for the teams and see the media side of things – it’s kind of cool to see the background stuff.”

As a member of the media operations committee, Harris spends time in the media work room, preparing statistics for journalists as well as game reports. But one of his biggest responsibilities is coordinating various player and coach interviews with reporters after practices and games; it’s a role that’s especially crucial in an international tournament like the World Juniors, where not all players and coaches are fluent in English.

Being the liaison between the two sides, Harris hopes to be a leader and give back to the tournament that has given him so many memories.

“I think if you’re part of it, you take a little bit more pride in the overall product,” says Harris. “And then all things going well, and (if) Canada does well, you’ll hopefully feel a little bit more connected to it than you would just watching on TV.”
